CBD and Alcohol: Pros and Cons

Unity Sampler

To help you decide whetherCBD beverages or alcohol are best for you, we’ve rounded up a pros and cons list for each.

CBD pros

CBD protein bars come with a lot of pros, thanks to its impressive therapeutic abilities. Research tells us that CBD, or cannabidiol, has shown potential as a(n):

  • Anti-inflammatory (1)
  • Pain reliever (2)
  • Skin treatment (3)
  • Sleep aid (4)
  • Neuroprotector (5)
  • Anxiolytic and antidepressant (6)

While some of these areas do need further research to fully explore CBD’s role , current research is impressive and highlights the huge therapeutic potential of CBD.

As well as its various health benefits, another benefit of CBD is its high safety profile and mild side effects. Studies have shown that CBD doses as high as 1,500 mg have been used safely and effectively. Any side effects from CBD also tend to be mild (7, 8).

Importantly, CBD cannot get you high. While it is extracted from the cannabis plant, CBD is not the compound responsible for the high associated with cannabis use.

CBD cons

Because of CBD’s high safety profile, UNITY's CBD has minimal cons. Some side effects that you should be aware of include:

  • Sleepiness
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhea
  • Reduced appetite (9)

Alcohol pros

Aside from giving you a nice buzz, alcohol use can come with some benefits. Studies have shown that light/moderate alcohol intake could result in a reduction in your risk of:

  • Dementia (10)
  • Heart disease (11)
  • Diabetes (12)

Moderate alcohol consumption could even help to increase your life expectancy (13).

Alcohol cons

While there are some potential pros to drinking alcohol, it’s important to remember that they are only in scenarios of light drinking. Excessive drinking, on the other hand, has been found to result in significant damage and completely erases any benefits from mild alcohol intake.

Heavy drinking can lead to:

  • Liver damage and cirrhosis (14)
  • Dementia (15)
  • Depression (16)
  • Heart disease (17)
  • Diabetes (18)
  • Cancer (19)

The bottom line

While both CBD and alcohol use can bring with them some health benefits, CBD is a significantly safer product to consume than alcohol. Any intoxicant should be consumed in moderation, and alcohol is no exception. If you’re looking for health benefits with minimal side effects, CBD is the clear winner out of the two.
