With CBD’s mountain of health benefits, it’s no wonder why everyone is flocking to this natural remedy (1, 2, 3, 4)! But if you’re interested in trying CBD for yourself, it’s essential to know that it’s not a one-size-fits-all product.

There are lots of forms of CBD out there. But don’t worry - we’ve laid out everything you need to know about the different types of CBD.

Full-Spectrum CBD

First up, there’s full-spectrum CBD. This is basically the mega-combo of CBD; you’re getting everything here! As the name might let on, full-spectrum CBD contains all the compounds from the plant that the CBD was extracted from. This means that with full-spectrum CBD, you can also expect to find compounds like THC, CBG, flavonoids, and terpenes in your product.

Be careful with full-spectrum CBD, as it contains THC (legally 0.3% or less), which is the compound in cannabis that gets you high (5). We don’t want you taking full-spectrum CBD to calm yourself before a job interview and then turning up a little too relaxed.

Legal status: Full-spectrum CBD is legal federally in the US, so long as it contains no more than 0.3% THC. Full-spectrum CBD products that contain higher levels of THC could be legal at the state level, depending on where you live. Check your local laws to find whether THC-heavy full-spectrum CBD is legal for you (6).

Broad-Spectrum CBD

The next form of CBD is broad-spectrum CBD. Broad-spectrum CBD is essentially the same as full-spectrum CBD, except that it does not contain any THC.

So you’re still getting all the extra bits from the cannabis plant that the CBD was extracted from, but you don’t have to worry about accidentally eating an entire party-sized bag of popcorn and laughing too hard at cartoons.

Legal status: Because broad-spectrum CBD does not contain THC, it is federally legal in the US (7).

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate makes things simple; it only contains CBD. CBD isolate is perfect if you want to try CBD's effects without any interference from other cannabinoids.

Since CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD, it's great if you're a first-time user or beginner. CBD isolate is refined, and so it also doesn't have any unpleasant smells or tastes.

Legal status: As a CBD-only product, CBD isolate is federally legal in the US (8).

Which form of CBD is best?

We recommend CBD isolate! 😉 We don't want anyone to fail a drug test! Also, this keeps the flavor and potency consistent from batch to batch.
